Messe München is one of the world's leading exhibition venues, located in the Trudering-Riem district on the eastern side of Munich, built on part of the former Munich-Riem airport and opened in 1998. It offers around 200,000 sqm of indoor space across 18 halls, and has the largest outdoor exhibition area of any German fairground at roughly 414,000 sqm, hosting over 200 events a year.
The venue
The 18 halls (A1-A6, B1-B6 and C1-C6) each offer around 10,000-11,000 sqm of clear exhibition space, arranged along a central concourse. The very large outdoor grounds, part green space, part usable exhibition and parking area, make Messe München particularly suited to fairs with heavy machinery and large outdoor exhibits, such as bauma, the world's largest trade fair by area. Over 5,000 parking spaces serve the site.
Exhibiting and stand-building context
Messe München's scale and its major machinery fairs (bauma, IFAT, drinktec, IAA Mobility) mean stands here are often large and technically demanding, with high floor loads, heavy craneage for outdoor plots and strict technical and safety rules. Build-up runs to a managed hall and dock schedule, and exhibitors typically confirm hall placement and logistics well ahead. Builders working the venue need familiarity with its approved-contractor requirements and outdoor-plot servicing.
Getting there
The grounds have excellent public-transport links: the Messestadt West and Messestadt Ost U-Bahn stations (lines U2, and event lines) sit at the west and east entrances, giving direct city-centre access, and Munich Airport is a straightforward transfer. This connectivity, combined with the large on-site parking, helps move the high visitor volumes of the venue's flagship fairs.
