Berlin trades on a different kind of authority than the older German fair cities. It is the consumer-electronics capital (IFA), the global travel-trade headquarters (ITB), and the planets largest rail-industry meeting point (InnoTrans). Where Frankfurt rewards process and Munich rewards precision, Berlin rewards creativity and willingness to experiment.
Messe Berlin: history and scale
Messe Berlin covers approximately 180,000 m of exhibition space across 26 halls, anchored visually by the 150 m Funkturm broadcasting tower built for the 1926 Berlin Radio Show. The complex is unusual among European venues for the variety of hall sizes - small, intimate halls (Hall 11 series) sit beside the cavernous Hall 26, which can hold an entire commercial train carriage and is the only hall in Europe with on-floor rail tracks.
Signature fairs
IFA Berlin every September draws 210,000 visitors and 1,800 exhibitors and remains the worlds most important consumer-electronics fair (with CES Las Vegas as its main rival). ITB Berlin in March is the largest travel-trade fair on earth. InnoTrans every two years brings the entire global rail-vehicle industry to Berlin - literally, including locomotives and metro carriages parked on Hall 26s rail tracks. Fruit Logistica, Bread&Butter and the Berlin Fashion Week round out the calendar.
Travel and logistics
Messe Berlin sits on the S-Bahn (Messe Sud and Messe Nord/ICC stations) and the U2 metro (Theodor-Heuss-Platz). BER Airport (opened 2020) is 50 minutes from the venue by S-Bahn or 30 minutes by taxi. Schenker handles on-site forwarding. Build-up typically opens five days before headline shows. Berlin hotel rates spike severely for IFA week (early September) and ITB week (early March); book by January for both.
Working in Berlin
Berlin business culture is famously direct, English-comfortable, and less formal than the Frankfurt or Munich norms. Stands are expected to feel modern and minimal - heavily branded "showroom" looks date quickly here. Crew working hours follow standard German limits (max 10 hours per day, 22:00 cutoff) but the citys 24-hour public transport simplifies late dismantles.
