The NEC and what its scale means for a brief
The National Exhibition Centre opened in 1976 and sits in Solihull, next to Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International station. It offers roughly 186,000 square metres of exhibition space, hosts around 500 events a year and takes over 2 million visitors, which puts it among the largest fairgrounds in Europe. Alongside the halls there are 32 purpose-built conference suites, around 16,500 parking spaces and a free shuttle service.
Our own records disagree on the hall count: the venue summary says 18 interconnected halls while our structured field says 20. We have not been able to reconcile that against the NEC directly, so treat the exact number as unconfirmed and check hall allocation with the organiser, which is what actually governs your build anyway.
The out-of-town position is the practical difference from a city-centre venue like Manchester Central. Approach roads are open and the dock and hall system is built for heavy, sustained vehicle movement, so build-up and breakdown are less constrained than in a central site. Against that, the NEC operates its own technical rules and approved-contractor arrangements, so confirm early whether your chosen builder can work there directly or must go through a nominated supplier. That question is worth settling before you sign off a design, not after.
Spring Fair 2027
The next major show we hold for the NEC is Spring Fair, running 7-10 February 2027, organised by Hyve Group. It is the UK's leading retail and gift trade show. Stands there are typically display-led and product-dense rather than large custom structures, because buyers walk long aisles and exhibitors need their range visible and reachable at speed.
The local build trade
We list one stand builder headquartered in Birmingham, Design Built Exhibitions Ltd. It does not yet carry our Verified badge, which means we have not completed a public-register check on it rather than that anything is known against it.
A single local listing against the UK's largest venue reflects our coverage, not the market. In practice NEC exhibitors draw on contractors from across the Midlands and the wider UK, and many national builders treat the NEC as a home ground. If you want a genuinely local firm, say so when you brief; otherwise expect to be matched with builders who travel in. We also list stand builders in Manchester, Glasgow and London.
